Project goal
My task for this project was to develop a character that mimicked the existing character's that my client had already purchased. The characters provided in the purchase did not were too low-poly for his needs. The purchased character did not have rigging hands or facial bones. In addition, the purchased character texturing presented a middle age character, while my client was looking for something more youthful. The character also needed a different wardrobe to fit the client's creative requirements.
My challenge was to create a new base character that followed the art style of what my client had already purchased.
Solution
To design this toon character, I used the retopology technic. This allowed me to create an identical character base. My next issue would be to give the head of the character hollow space for an adjustable mouth. This would allow me to add teeth and a tongue for animated lip-syncing. Additional facial details such as lip blow and lashes were added for eye-blinking expressions.
For the textures, I used the cage baking process to first copy the existing textures. Then I used the color and normal map to adjust the final result to the client's needs. This process was accomplished with map texture painting and editing within Photoshop and Blender 3D.
Once both modeling and textures were to the client's liking, I rigged the character. Because this is a toon-based character, I had to create a custom rig. This rig included the body, fingers, face, and hair bones. The bone included now made this character ideal for both MR (mixed reality) and VR (virtual reality) game development.
After the first character was accomplished, I was tasked with creating 3 additional female characters.
